Joy Boy, A Tribute To Julius Eastman - DE SINGEL (2024)

In 1990 the American composer Julius Eastman dies an inglorious death. Twenty years previously, he was one of the icons of New York’s downtown music scene, and his ground-breaking and often provocative compositions pave the way for post-minimalism. But over the course of the 80s, Eastman becomes trapped in a downwards spiral, which after a period of homelessness proves fatal. He leaves behind almost no scores or recordings. It is only in recent years that he is being afforded the recognition he deserves. As a black homosexual man, Eastman made his life the subject of his art.

Pianist and Eastman-afficionado Daan Vandewalle was commissioned by DE SINGEL with creating a full-evening show as a tribute to this genius composer. He is accompanied by flautist Petr Kotik and pianist Joe Kubera – both of whom were friends of Eastman’s in the 70s, soprano Lieselot De Wilde, countertenor Arturo den Hertog, Djuwa on the piano and members of the legendary S.E.M Ensemble from New York. Expect Eastman’s greatest hits such as Evil N*****, Gay Guerilla, Joy Boy and Our Father, in  a unique line-up and setting with new filmic interventions by Collectif Faire-Part, in-house artist at DE SINGEL.
