If you thought Djuwa would be taking a break after the just finished creation of Mx. Coelacunt will live forever, think again.
This summer, Djuwa Mroivili will take a seat behind the piano in Helstone in het Pand der Goden, a new production by theatre maker Mathieu Wijdeven. At its heart lies a fascinating question: what does it mean to create an opera on Surinamese soil, shaped by European classical traditions while deeply rooted in Surinamese stories? More than a century after its creation, Het Pand der Goden which was written by J.N. Helstone (1853-1927) returns to the stage, inviting audiences to rediscover its relevance today. Together with Mathieu Wijdeven and opera singer Frank Dolphin Wong, Djuwa helps bring this remarkable story back to life. Blending documentary theatre, opera, and musical storytelling, the performance dives into a world of spirits, gods, myths, and forgotten histories. I Vow To Distract Forever
In I Vow To Distract Forever Djuwa promises that she will always be her most authentic self as a performer, even if she is considered to be ‘distractive’ from a classical perspective. She wants to break through the classical hierarchies between composer, musician and instrument and aims for equally pleasurable experiences for all involved parties, where there is space for experiment, strength and softness.
