Meet the diva
Djuwa mroivili
(they/she)
Djuwa Mroivili (Amsterdam, 1998) is a Comorian-Dutch multidisciplinary artist, afro-hair inspirator, fangirl, curator and researcher based in Amsterdam.
Although she is trained as a classical pianist, and concerts are still part of her practice (both solo and in collaboration with others), she also experiments with other performance formats in which music plays a role. The performances she develops as a maker are often socially critical and conceptually layered in nature, and are often inspired by findings from archival research.
On stage, Mroivili then positions herself as a vulnerable storyteller, who uses music, words, images and body to tell her stories. Mroivili has a great love for works by Black composers from the first half of the 20th century in the US, and also regularly performs their works.
Filmmaker Naomi White made the documentary “Als ik zelf de zon ben” (When I Myself am the Sun) about her activism and artistic practice, which was released in 2023 and was nominated for a Golden Calf. In March 2024, Mroivili's debut album "Adoration" was released, which she recorded with double bassist James Oesi.
Currently in the works in the diva’s lab
Djuwa is currently working on two projects, the first of which is Hou Zelf Je Bek (English: Shut The Fuck Up Yourself), which will premiere at Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ (Amsterdam) on December 28th 2025. For this project, Djuwa is researching the politics behind silence and neutrality in concert halls and public spaces. Which bodies and behaviors are seen as distractive, dangerous or “too loud” - and why? What does it take to enforce silence and neutrality in concert halls and public spaces? And why should silence or neutrality be desirable when the world is on fire? Catch Djuwa outside, hanging out in Amsterdam neighborhoods that are slowly gentrifying. Or in a library reading comic books about aliens: the ultimate “disruptive others”. In any case, get tickets for Hou Zelf Je Bek!
The second project cooking in the diva’s lab is Mx. CoelaCunt Will Live Forever, produced by Theater Rotterdam. For this musical theatre piece Djuwa is aiming to blend together queer, Comorian, anti-colonial and prehistoric fish histories into a unique story. A story exploring collective remembering, mourning, celebrating, dreaming, resisting and revolting. Djuwa will be in the Comoros all summer enjoying sunshine, playing and listening to music, researching, and chilling on beaches. Your emails may or may not find her. But once she’s back, you’ll find Mx. CoelaCunt in a theatre near you in the spring of 2026. Keep an eye on this website, or subscribe to Djuwa’s newsletter to stay up to date with tour dates and to be first in line to get tickets!
