Fair and Square & Eutopia (2023)
From September to December 2022, Djuwa conducted a study under the supervision of the National Archives into how the worldview behind the colonial section at the 1883 World Exhibition (which took place on the Museumplein in Amsterdam) influences the contemporary programming of cultural institutions on the Museumplein.
She shared the results of this research in January 2024 at the Bijlmerpark Theater, in the form of a performative lecture called Fair en Square. This was followed by Eutopia, a performance curated by Djuwa with performances by Jerrold Saija, Shishani Vranckx, Lashaaawn, Maria Anouk and Raziyah Heath, to whom she asked the questions: what stories would you tell if you didn't have to worry about a white gaze, and how would you tell those stories? What things would you dare to do that you don't dare to do now?
Eutopia is built on the idea that an “ideal future” may not be an unattainable place at all, but a state of being, which sometimes already occurs now, in the beautiful moments when we give each other space or are given the space to be unapologetic, in whatever form.
